I've watched your video where you lay down Elvis. Are there any other videos in your library about laying a horse down?

Have a horse here that I can throw anything on (ie. tarps, bags, saddle pads, bags filled with rocks for weight etc). Yet when it comes to the saddle as soon as it lands on his back (wether I do it slow or quick) he takes off bucking. He’s good to cinch up with my surcingle and such. I can throw stuff all around him. It’s only the saddle. 

How do I stop this?

As soon as it’s fully on his back he’s gone and it falls off. I try to turn him so I can keep it on him but he kicks out at my knees. 

I’ve thought to try and tie him but worry I’ll get in a huge wreck. 

Richard Boatwright - I have a question. I've seen patience poles used to teach a horse to tie up - is that a method you recommend?

Hello Richard Boatwright! I've recently come across your training videos and love the exercises you have for colts. Question, my filly is having a hard time listening outside of an arena (particularly at a lope; ex. she'll lope off decently, not perfect, but then shift over to the barn/pasture and not listen to leg or hand cues), do you have any recommended drills to help this? 

Wanted to say thanks Richard Boatwright for the content and share a success story with my wife's horse. We have roped some off of him and he's tolerated but never been completely good with it. Like good horsemen (sarcasm) we left it go because it's sometimes more fun to rope than it is to work on your horse. Last couple outs he got tangled a little bit and had a couple near wrecks.

We went back through your 'How to Prep a Colt to Rope' exercises and started him back on it the right way. We found quite a few 'resistance' areas which we would not have wanted to find in the saddle! This is him after he eventually decided that the rope attached to his foot was going to kill him.

Hello, just got my two year old filly back from the trainer Saturday and saddled her up for the first ride on Sunday.  So right when I got up she started bucking right away and got me off fairly quick.  The trainer said I should have lunged her but the round pen was so wet from all the rain we have had here in East Texas I just walked her several times.  I remember the back cinch was pretty tight.

I rode her the week before down in Houston and she did fine.  But the trainer did lunge her a few laps with the saddle on.

How far do you plan to take your roping series? I love the first few videos and it’s going to give me a good start in a few months. Do you plan to go as far as doing box work like with team roping? I’ve looked at other sites but don’t seem to find anyone doing the real-deal work on a green horse. Everyone seems to talk about what they’d do while they’re riding their high dollar head horse.

Just wanted to say I’m really enjoying this site. I’ve ridden for a long time and always wanted to start a colt and this year was the year. I watched all of your colt starting videos multiple times and started on the journey. So far, I’ve done 3 weeks of ground work and have 4 rides to date. All has gone very well up to this point. I’m developing a very willing partner. I really appreciate your content and look forward to learning more and continuing on the journey. 

I have a 12 yr horse I bought six months ago. He is definitely a work in progress. I went to put him in a different horse trailer (not a stock trailer) and he freaked out when I went to close the divider. He backed right out and had the fear of death in his eyes. I got him to calm down and started the process again, he’ll get in, but once I start to move the divider same thing happened. He has no issues in a stock trailer so I assume it has something to do with claustrophobia…?!  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’ll keep on trying. Thanks for all you do Richard~ Zak
