Christopher Frausto  there is a good way to tie off to help the horse to stand still.   I'll try to get you a video of it this week.

Hi Brett Petersen, Any setup is fine.  I guess if I can choose, I'd use the snaffle with a neck rope.  It seems to work best for me, but the important thing is the work, not the gear.  🙂

Brett Petersen I wouldn't say a round pen is necessary, but it sure makes things easier.  I'd just get started and see how it goes.  If you can get your horse accustomed to lunging in the arena without pulling on you too much, I'll bet you could get it done.  Good luck.🙂

Brett Petersen Well, at Creek, we wouldn't touch the babies at all until weaning just because there were so many and they grew up outside.  That was not ideal, but just the way it had to be.  It was pretty dangerous for us and the foals for those first few weeks after weaning.  I've also been around foals that had been raised like pets.  I actually prefer the wild way over this one because the little horse grows up to be a big horse that still thinks it can get all over a person.  I think the ideal way is somewhere in between.  I have a foal at home right now and I don't want the foal to be wild, but I don't want a pet either.  I want her to learn to be a horse with her momma. I also want to be able to get my hands on her if need be, though.  I might even put a halter on her occasionally to start to teach how it works.  I guess the biggest thing is to treat a little horse the same way you would a bigger horse.  Have them respect your space and no treats.  Keep us posted on the progress.
