Rescue mare- first ride. Finally got the first ride on this rescue mare im training. 14 years young. Had her teeth done today and by the work that was done she’d probably never seen a dentist.

Hey!

I’ve got a nice 2 yr old AQHA Colt I’m bringing along. He’s a lot like the horse “neeches”. I got the first saddling done, he bronced out quite a bit to be honest hahah. Anywho, now when I go to throw on the saddle, and the stirrups, etc., fall on the opposite side he is veryyyyyy sensitive. When I did do the first saddle, he bucked good but by the end of the session he was working well with it. Just curious if there’s anything specific I should do to get him more “comfortable” with things being on his back. He’s completely fine with the saddle pad and cinch combo, I’ve flanked him, and had ropes all over him. Is it a matter of me getting more confident in letting him bronc out?

Missed the call last night darn it. Hope there’s another one. Anywho. Here’s an update on that rescue mare that I’m training. I honestly think she’s broke. And someone ruined her- she understands pressure- she’s used to people with weight in the stirrups- she adapts to training methods- and will try different tricks and once she realizes they don’t work we have break thru. So we’re inching closer to our first ride

I know this isn't really training related, but wanted to see if you Richard, and/or anyone else had any experience with this.

I got this mare about 3 months ago and we've been doing groundwork, ground driving, and I've gotten in her and got a few steps.

She set up due to all the rain we've been getting(thank God) and turned up lame about a week ago. We exhausted the resources of our local vet and wound up having to go about an hour and a half south for x-rays. Vet highly suspected abscess-ok fine. Soak, pack, wrap.

But the skyline view showed severe navicular front right, moderate front left. She just turned 5 in April-a baby.

This is all very new to me and I don't know what life might look like moving forward. She isn't yet broke and I'm a bit concerned that even if she can handle light riding, she may not be able to physically handle some of the groundwork it would take to get us to the point of light riding.

Any thoughts?

How do I get an older horse to be good for a farrier ? Just pick there feet up repeatedly till they are fine with it ? Or are there other methods to it ?

Something a little different is happening this Wednesday.

I'm going live for the first time on B1, just me, talking straight to you. Just an open conversation from the ranch.

We'll cover whatever comes up, what's going on here at the Canadian River Ranch, horsemanship, whatever's on your mind. If you've got questions, bring them. If you just want to listen, that's fine too.

Wednesday, June 4th at 6:00 PM Mountain Time

Here's the link to join: https://b1horsemanship.com/programs/live-n4i9brpqu7a

A few things to know:

  • This is a live Zoom call, so you can turn your camera on and actually be part of the conversation

  • It's open to B1 members

  • Show up a few minutes early so we can get started on time

I've been wanting to do this for a while. Looking forward to seeing some of you Wednesday night.

If you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Be one, Richard 🤠
