We’re now up to 5 rides on this 14 year old I had so many struggles with when she came in. She’s starting to come around. Still gets some attitude here and there. I’d really start to like working on getting her to give to the leg pressure. She does sometimes so I try to reward her quickly. Other times I feel her pushing against it. I’ve got 2 more months to get her ready to go back to the rescue and be adoption ready.

Rescue mare- first ride. Finally got the first ride on this rescue mare im training. 14 years young. Had her teeth done today and by the work that was done she’d probably never seen a dentist.

Missed the call last night darn it. Hope there’s another one. Anywho. Here’s an update on that rescue mare that I’m training. I honestly think she’s broke. And someone ruined her- she understands pressure- she’s used to people with weight in the stirrups- she adapts to training methods- and will try different tricks and once she realizes they don’t work we have break thru. So we’re inching closer to our first ride

Yes! She’s moving off much quieter when it’s time to work. I start pretty much every session with the flag before doing any lead line work- she used to bolt and now she’ll walk off it quietly. Her biggest thing now is getting real worked up when being tied up or by herself. I’ve tried moving her feet, she’ll be drenched in sweat and still trying to dig for oil. Not quite sure how to work on that now, she doesn’t pull back, she just moves sideways a ton. If she’s in a stall she gets to pawing at the door if I’m working another horse. Everyday is like a new onion layer to peel back!

Just getting her to calm down and get her thinking. Which, she is coming around. She’s had some really good sessions the last few days. The rescue sent her to me in the hopes of getting her started under saddle to increase her chances at adoption. They do a big trainers challenge and horse show every August for their rescues. Then they hold an auction at the end of it for people to adopt the horses. So you know, no pressure on me at all. 😂

Calib McCollister boy you can say that again. Luckily they have “no expectations” but daggum. I’d hate to have to tell them she’s likely not adoption material and they’re stuck with her. I think I’d rather strap a bottle rocket to a tigers tail.

Think I may have met my match. Took in a 14 year old mare from a rescue to try and get her fit for adoption. And she. Will.NOT. Calm down. Every session it’s like she forgot what she did the day before. Anxious about everything, is this something time will work through? I’ve got her through August. But she sees a lunge whip, or a flag, or a handy stick and she wigs out. Now I can’t catch her- it’s like she’s going backwards. Any pointers? Been following along the E20 but it’s like there’s no progress with her.

Little update on Ward! Wish I it would let me attach a video but it won’t let me. Ward’s owner extended him through this month. Ward has really done well in his time with me. Rides off pretty well now with little to no ground work. He’s still pretty stiff to one direction, but loosening up. I’ve had the barn intern up on him now and he’s just really calming down. Pretty pleased with this big 3 year old. Going to be a sad day when he goes home!
